Sematrinity Prefilled Pen Solution For Injection is used for chronic weight management in adults. It is prescribed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity to help achieve and maintain weight loss in patients with obesity or those who have weight-related health conditions.
Sematrinity contains Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics a natural hormone involved in appetite regulation. It works by slowing down gastric emptying, increasing the feeling of fullness, and reducing food cravings, which helps lower overall calorie intake.
In some cases, Sematrinity may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal discomfort, dizziness, or altered taste. Talk to your doctor if the side effects persist or worsen.
Sematrinity should also not be used during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or in children under 12 years of age. The pen contains 4 doses, designed to provide coverage for an entire month since it is administered once weekly.
Sematrinity is used to treat various medical conditions. The detailed uses are as follows:
Chronic weight management: Used in adults with obesity or overweight with associated comorbidities to help achieve and maintain long-term weight loss.
Cardiovascular risk reduction: Used to lower the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke in adults with obesity or overweight and established heart disease.
Storage:
Store in a cool and dry place away from sunlight
What if I have taken an overdose of Sematrinity:
An overdose may lead to severe nausea, vomiting, or low blood sugar levels. In case of overdose, patients must be closely monitored for symptoms, and appropriate supportive treatment should be given.
Drug Warnings:
Do not use Sematrinity if you or a close family member has ever had a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or if you have ever experienced a severe allergic reaction to Semaglutide or any of its ingredients.
Do not use Sematrinity if you have or have ever had pancreatitis (inflamed pancreas), gallbladder problems or gallstones, kidney disease, severe digestive issues like gastroparesis (slow stomach emptying), diabetic eye disease (retinopathy), or any mental health concerns such as depression or suicidal thoughts.
Inform about every medicine, vitamin, or herbal supplement you are taking, as Sematrinity may change how other medicines are absorbed. For instance, using Sematrinity with insulin or sulfonylureas can increase the risk of low blood sugar, so your doctor may need to adjust other treatments.
Do not use Sematrinity if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Stop the medicine at least 2 months before trying to conceive due to its long-lasting effect in the body. If you find out you are pregnant while using Sematrinity , stop it immediately.
Sematrinity is not recommended for children under 12 years old, because its safety has not been fully established.
Do not use Sematrinity if you experience any severe or persistent side effects, such as ongoing stomach pain (which may signal pancreatitis), signs of an allergic reaction (swelling, rash, difficulty breathing), severe vomiting or diarrhoea leading to dehydration, or mood changes such as depression or suicidal thoughts.
Diet & Lifestyle Advise:
Follow a calorie-controlled, balanced diet as advised by your dietitian. This is essential for weight loss and to maximise the effect of Sematrinity .
Choose high-fibre, nutrient-dense foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins. These help you feel full longer and support blood sugar control.
Avoid high-sugar and high-fat foods, which can slow weight loss and affect blood sugar levels. Limit processed snacks, fried foods, and sugary drinks.
Eat smaller, frequent meals and chew slowly to reduce nausea and discomfort, as Sematrinity slows stomach emptying.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. This helps prevent dehydration, especially if you experience vomiting or diarrhoea, which are possible side effects.
Limit or avoid alcohol, as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar (if you have diabetes or take insulin/sulfonylureas) and may worsen gastrointestinal side effects.
Be physically active for at least 150 minutes a week (e.g., brisk walking, cycling, swimming), as regular exercise enhances weight loss and improves blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.
Monitor your blood sugar regularly if you have type 2 diabetes or are taking other diabetes medications, as weight loss and Sematrinity may change your insulin needs.
Keep regular follow-up appointments so your doctor can track your progress, adjust your dose if necessary, and check for side effects or complications.
Adopt long-term healthy habits, to help keep the weight off after stopping Sematrinity, continue following a healthy diet and regular physical activity.
